If politicians were stocks ?

With political season simmering, I was wondering what if Modi, Kejriwal and Rahul were stocks – What would be there attributes ? And would you invest in them ? Let us look at the each one of them with an investment lens

modi-vs-rahul-kejriwal

Kejriwal – is a young start-up (1+ year) which has done remarkably well in highly competitive market (Indian politics).  It’s gaining mind share and market share in this competitive market. It’s key assets are it’s alternative political ideology & connect with middle class populace.  It is a brain child of a non-political movement and there are only few handful cases where  a non-political movement  has led to creation of a successful political outfit.  Putting  Kejriwal to test here is what I feel

Growth – Anyone looking to do a stock analysis for a company is probably attracted to it because of its growth. The attraction of growth has probably led more investors into temptation than anything else.  Kejriwal is a young start up hence growth opportunities are huge, the company has right set of product mix to capitalize on the opportunity. It has fared well up until now, however it’s USP is suited to upscale market would they … Read the rest

Is predicting winners in stock markets possible ?

In our last few posts we have discussed about India’s fastest and most consistent wealth creators in last decade. In today’s post we back test stock predictions made by Motilal Oswal annual wealth studies.

I have picked years  2006 -10 for our analysis so that we can have at least 3 years of stock performance data available for latest predictions. In addition to this for the sake of consistency I have kept Nifty and CNX Nifty midcap as a benchmark indexes to compare performances for all stock predictions.  Each year the studies had a value investing theme simplified into a mathematical model to identify prospective investments. Lets look at those predictions and how have they fared over years.

2006 – The value investing theme was favorable terms of trade, the study states that a company enjoys favourable ”terms of trade” if its debtors are lower than its creditors. So favorable terms of trade could result in zero or even negative working capital. Whereas adverse terms of trade could mean very high working capital requirements, making the business unprofitable.

The above explanation was converted into a mathematical model and three stocks were identified with favorable terms of trade- HPCL, … Read the rest

What I learnt from Tim and The 4 hour work week

I had recently laid my hands on this fantastic book by Tim Ferriss.  Although written in 2006 it is still relevant in today’s times .

I would not like to discuss each and every  tricks, tools  & ideas which he has shared in his book, however I would like share what is the best I learned from this book. Without further Adieu here we go:-

  1. The timing is never right – Quoting from book “I once asked my mom how she decided when to have her first child, little oP me. The answer was simple: “It was something we
wanted, and we decided there was no point in putting it off. The
timing is never right to have a baby.” And so it is. Life is a glorious journey of uncertainties, there will be in doubts , questions & confusions  in whatever we want to pursue. There is no joy in putting off something which you always wanted to do because unless you do it the timing will never be right. Consider what is stopping you  financially, emotionally, and physically ? and then take it head on
  2. Stop being busy – There are deadlines to meet in jobs, commitments to fulfill
